Makaton is a language programme using signs, symbols and speech to help people communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs are used, with speech, in spoken word order to help provide extra clues about what someone is saying.
Using signs can help people who have no speech or whose speech is unclear, whilst using symbols can help those with limited speech and those who cannot, or prefer not to sign. Makaton particularly helps those with:
- Poor attention and listening skills
- Difficulties understanding or developing speech
- Autistic Spectrum Disorder
- Mild/moderate/severe learning difficulties
- Visual or hearing impairment
- Sensory difficulties
Makaton is extremely flexible as it can be personalised to an individual’s needs and used at a level suitable for them. Most people start using Makaton as children then naturally stop using the signs and symbols when they no longer need them.
